Title:Media as a generators of media memes. Example: Al Jezeera Balkans
Abstract:The theory of memes, the basic units of cultural transfer, derives from the idea that cultural information is inherited in our brains, similar as biological information in our bodies. The theory of media memes is based on the transmission of media ideas to the audience. The aim of this thesis was to investigate how television media form and spread media memes, how they are transmitted to viewers, and how their reception is influenced by the viewer's potential prior opinion / standpoint on the subject. In this study, Al Jazeera Balkans’ reports on the conviction of Radovan Karadžić were analyzed. By means of open coding, qualitative and quantitative analysis of the results, we confirmed the existence of media memes incorporated into reports. We also confirmed the existence of a matrix of related memes, which in our brains represents a virtual sieve that does not allow new memes, dissimilar to our own, to settle or replicate within us. This thesis presents media memes as a new approach in audience studies and the study of media effects at the micro level and is one of the few that deals with the study of media memes.
