Title:The Dynamics of Drying Economically Important Grasses and Legumes from Permanent Grassland
Abstract:The experiment was performed on an experimental field at UKC Pohorski dvor, Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences in Hoče. In the experimental field, three different grasses were dried on the ground: Italian Ryegrass (Lolium multiflorum Lam.), Cocksfoot (Dactylis glomerata L.), Meadow fescue (Festuca pratensis L.) and one legume, Red clover (Trifolium pratense L.). Drying was performed in three periods: 7 May 2018 to 10 May 2018, 18 May 2018 to 22 May 2018 and 11 June 2018 to 13 June 2018, when the selected species were in the overgrowth phase, budding or beginning of flowering. Our goal was to determine how quickly an individual grass or legume would dry to a dryness suitable for storage (75 – 80%). The results showed that the drying speed of grasses and legumes depends mainly on the weather conditions and air humidity, as poorer weather conditions and higher air humidity significantly slow down the drying. In our experiment, Red clover contained the highest percentage of dry matter during harvesting in two of the three drying periods.
