Abstract:Uvod: Benzodiazepini so učinkovita zdravila za zdravljenje nespečnosti in anksioznosti, vendar se pogosto uporabljajo preko priporočenih časovnih okvirjev zdravljenja, kar vodi v odvisnost od benzodiazepinov.

Title:The quality of life of adults addicted to benzodiazepines
Abstract:Introduction: Benzodiazepines are effective drugs for the treatment of insomnia and anxiety, but they are often used over the recommended time frame of treatment, leading to benzodiazepine addiction. Chronical use of benzodiazepines can cause cognitive disorders, falls, traffic accidents, dependence and tolerance. With this study we wanted to determine the effects of benzodiazepines on the quality of life. Methods: In the diploma thesis we used a descriptive method of work. In the empirical part, qualitative research was performed using a semi-structured interview with a benzodiazepine-dependent patient, and thus conducted a case study. Results: We have found that dependence on benzodiazepines worsens quality of life. It mainly affects sleep, cognitive functions, mobility, social interactions and causes sexual problems. Dependence on benzodiazepines causes depression, fear, memory problems, attention problems, apathy and causes nervousness. Conclusion: The dependence on benzodiazepines affects the quality of life. Even more damage is caused by the consumption of benzodiazepines together with alcohol. In many cases, excessive prescription of benzodiazepines is responsible for the occurance of addiction. Therefore, we believe that more control over the prescription of benzodiazepines is needed, and also to raise awareness among patients of the correct use and harmfulness of benzodiazepines.
