Title:Psyhological consequences of surviving a war trauma in Srebrenica
Abstract:In my diploma I present the facts, the course of, and the consequences of the biggest mass murder in Europe after the Second World War. The events took place in 1995, in Srebrenica. I focus on describing the psychological consequences which occurred between and after the war, and are still present in the survivors. Among them are stress, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder and depression. Stress is a condition to which we are exposed every day. My emphasis is on negative stress, which is triggered by feelings of hopelessness, sadness, anger, fear and anxiety. People who are susceptible to clinical anxiety can develop an anxiety disorder. Anxiety disorder is when the person is afraid of uncomfortable or dangerous events, and when this fear is so strong that it becomes an obstacle and can also influence the ability to evaluate the danger level. Among psychological war consequences is also post-traumatic stress disorder. This is a serious and long term disorder that develops as a late response to a very traumatic event. Everyone is susceptible to it, regardless of sex or age. Amids the more serious forms of psychological consequences is depression, which develops in people who lived in an extremely stressful environment. The probability that people have one of these disorders is high, considering the horrors, suffering and torment they have been exposed to. The murders in Srebrenica were committed in few days, but the consequences are lifelong.
