Abstract:V teoretičnem delu magistrskega dela opisujemo čezmerno telesno težo in debelost kot zdravstveni problem ter nato še kot družbeni problem.

Title:Being Overweight: How It Affects the Body Image of Slovene Teenagers
Abstract:In the theoretical part of the master’s thesis we have described overweight and obesity first as medical and second as a social problem. Moving on, we have looked at body image and defined what physical self-concept and self-respect stand for. Then we have shown research concerning body image, physical self-concept and the effects of socio-economic status, overweight and media on physical self-concept. Further on, we have described eating disorders and lastly some possible approaches towards decreasing the obesity rate in children and adolescents. In the empirical part, we introduced our research, which was done through the online survey page 1ka. The survey consisted of two parts. The first part was built of questions, chosen for this particular survey, while the other part was built from the Slovene translation of the self-concept questionnaire PSDQ. We used SPSS to analyze the data. Looking into the results, we can conclude that the problems with overweight and obesity have increased in the last few decades. We can also infer that the overweight teenagers have lower results in overall physical self-concepts, compared to the other adolescents. We also conclude that there are more overweight children in families with a lower socio-economic status than in other families. We have not proven a statistically significant difference in physical abilities of the overweight and normal weight adolescents. We also have not proven a statistically significant difference in physical self-concept between our two groups of overweight boys and girls.
