Raziskovalne metode: V teoretičnem delu zaključnega dela smo uporabili deskriptivno metodo dela, podprto z analizo relevantne domače in tuje strokovne literature.

Title:Appropriate handling of nurses with peripheral intravenous catheters
Abstract:Background and purpose: Nurses work with peripheral intravenous catheters daily, which may be associated with a number of complications and may harm the health of patients and increase the costs of medical treatment. The purpose of the final work was to examine the correct handling of peripheral intravenous catheters and by means of a research to determine the extent to which nurses are familiar with and abide by the theoretical instructions for proper handling of peripheral intravenous catheters in a clinical environment. Research methods: In the theoretical part of the final work, we used a descriptive method of work supported by an analysis of relevant Slovenian and foreign specialised literature. The research part of the final work was based on a quantitative research method. We used a survey, which included 100 health professionals who achieved at least an undergraduate level of education in the field of nursing care. Results: By analysing the results of the survey, we have determined that 50% of the respondents believe that all nursing care providers do not follow the rules and professional guidelines for using the intravenous route. As many as 81% of the respondents would wish for additional training in the field of peripheral intravenous catheters. 36% of the respondents think that the most common mistake in handling the intravenous catheters is the infrequent maintenance of the transitivity of the cannula. When inserting a peripheral intravenous cannula, 42% of the respondents always use gloves. Safe intravenous cannulas are always used by 36% of the respondents. Discussion and conclusion: By analysing the results, we have determined that the respondents have shown a great desire for additional training in the field of peripheral intravenous catheters. Based on the conducted research, we propose that additional training in the field of appropriate handling of peripheral intravenous catheters among nurses in the clinical environment is occasionally conducted.
Keywords:Intravenous cannulae, intravenous catheter complications, catheter blockage, intravenous access, needle-free cnnectors.
