Abstract:Predmet magistrske naloge je ilustracija (likovna oprema) starejših knjižnih izdaj pisatelja Ivana Cankarja (1876–1918), in sicer del, ki so izšla za časa njegovega življenja. V sklepu so podana ključna spoznanja magistrskega dela in izpostavljen znanstveni prispevek k umetnostnozgodovinskemu področju. Naloga vključuje seznam in katalog prvih Cankarjevih ilustriranih izdaj.

Title:Illustration in older literary publications of Ivan Cankar
Abstract:The subject of the graduation thesis is illustration (artwork) of older book editions by author Ivan Cankar (1876–1918), more specifically, works published during his lifetime. Illustration powered by the secession period was especially prominent on the territory of Slovenia at the turn of the 19th century. At the time around 1900, the importance of illustration was significantly higher than nowadays. Bonds of friendship formed between author Cankar and visual artists (Ivan Jager (1871–1959), Matija Jama (1872–1947), Hinko Smrekar (1883–1942) and others), which reflected in their successful collaboration. Along with artists who illustrated Cankar’s works, the thesis also discusses the collaboration between the publisher, the author and the illustrators, where the artistic influences came from, how much emphasis was put into illustration in comparison with the text, to which extent contemporary literary works were illustrated and how illustration was received by the critics. The thesis features a detailed analysis of Hinko Smrekar’s illustrations for the book Krpanova kobila (Krpan’s Mare). It sheds light on the role of publishers in book publishing and what kind of literature they were publishing; the thesis is trying to answer how decisions were made about which parts of the text would be illustrated (or whether the choice was left to the artists themselves) and how the illustrators were chosen (on the basis of recommendations, friendship or other). Special emphasis is given to an important publisher of Slovenian modernists Leopold (Lavoslav) Schwentner (1865–1952) who developed a long and fertile cooperation with Cankar. The conclusion offers the key findings of the graduation thesis and highlights the scientific contribution to the field of art history. The thesis includes a list and catalogue of Cankar’s first illustrated editions.
