Title:The difference between the public and academic image of burnout
Abstract:Burnout has been in the focus of the researchers for the last few decades. Higher attention for this phenomenon by the general public can also be observed. This is to be noticed especially in the various internet sources, where high quantity of posts, articles and commentaries can be traced. The researchers have been warning that the general public uses these internet sources as the main source of information about mental disturbances and states. The main obstacle of such approach is a questionable quality and credibility of information. Inaccurate information can consequently influence inadequate professional help or neglect of mental problems. This is the reason why a research has been done on what the difference between the professional and public image of burnout is. With the content analysis and methodological guidelines of how to analyse media publications a research has been done on congruence of these topics with academic findings and to what extent deviations occur. Furthermore, we were interested in how frequently these burnout topics occur and at the same time how congruent they are with the academic literature based on who the author is: whether this is a professional, a journalist, general public or a person with a burnout experience. It has been found out that some certain burnout topics are more frequently represented in the media (with some differences occur in their frequency based on authors) and that with various certain topics larger incongruence can be noticed than with other academic findings. The results indicate the need for awareness and interventions, which could lessen the difference and represent a basis for the guidelines of the media publishing on burnout.
