Title:Parental beliefs and practices regarding management of fever in pre-school children
Abstract:Introduction: Fever is a common occurrence in a child up to the age of six. Regardless of the child's degree of impairment and the possible presence of accompanying symptoms, it can cause a feeling of fear and helplessness in parents, which can lead to an unreasonable practice of controlling it. The aim of this study is to identify beliefs of parents from the general population, about fever in preschool children and their practice of controlling it. Research methodology and methods: We conducted a cross-sectional study using a survey method, involving 114 parents. Data was collected using a validated questionnaire. Using a method of data collection and with the help of statistical methods, using the descriptive and concluding method, we verified set hypotheses and answered both research questions. Results: We found that parents decide to use antipyretics primarily in order to reduce fever and to alleviate the accompanying pain and discomfort of the child. Antipyretic application is decided when the fever is measured between 38 °C and 39 °C. In order to reduce the child’s fever, parents prefer to use a combination of syrup and suppositories. We have learned that there is no gender difference in identifying unwanted health side effects of fever, and also no association between the level of parental education and the degree of child’s fever in which they decide to apply antipyretics (p = 0,964). Discussion and conclusion: Parents have a good knowledge and practice of managing fever in pre-school children, which is in line with the international recommendations. However, we cannot generalize the result of the survey because of insufficient sample of surveyed parents.
