Title:Pre-School children's reactions to parental separation
Abstract:In the thesis, we examine the responses of pre-school children aged three to six years to parental separation from the perspective of psychological problems, which are shown in the period of one year after parental separation. In the theoretical part, we give a brief description of the family concept and the impact of separation upon it. In the following theoretical part, we focus on the child's experience of parental separation, the different influences that it has on the child and the child's responses to these influences, and the strategies for helping a child after parental separation. In the empirical part of the thesis, using the quantitative research method, we determine the level of general and specific psychological problems of pre-school children with separated parents, the difference in the level of psychological problems in relation to the frequency of contact that the child has with a father and in relation to the monthly net income of parents. We also determine the extent to which mothers feel that their relationship between them and the child has worsened after separation. On the basis of the data obtained using the questionnaire, which was answered by the separated parents of pre-school children, we find that more than ninety percent of children have a high, i.e. very serious, level of general psychological problems, with girls having a higher level of psychological problems than boys. Most psychological problems are found in the area of hyperactivity and emotional problems. The latter are particularly significant in four- and five-year-old pre-school children and in pre-school girls. According to separate parents, their children have the least behavioral problems and problems with the absence of prosocial behavior. We also found that there are no differences in the level of psychological problems in relation to the frequency of child’s contact with their father and to the parents' monthly net income. Concerning the relationship between the parent and the child after parental separation, the results of the study showed that a poor third of mothers and two-thirds of fathers are facing a worsening of the relationship with the child.
