Abstract:Namen magistrske naloge je bil analizirati morfološko variabilnost v velikosti in obliki leve polovice spodnje čeljustnice (leve spodnjočeljustne kosti) navadnega jelena Cervus elaphus z vidika spolnega dimorfizma, postnatalnega ontogenetskega razvoja ter morebitnih razlik med geografskimi območji. V raziskavi smo uporabili metode geometrijske mofrometrije, ki omogočajo ločeno analiziranje velikosti in oblike struktur. V analizo smo vključili 325 spodnjih čeljustnic mladičev (telet obeh spolov) in enoletnih živali (lanščakov in junic) z devetih lovskoupravljavskih območij (LUO) v Sloveniji. Gorenjskim in Primorskim LUO.

Title:Mandible variability of red deer Cervus elaphus in Slovenia; ontogenetic development, sexual dimorphism and geographic differences
Abstract:The goal of this Master's thesis was to analyze morphological variability in shape and size of the left hemimandible of red deer Cervus elaphus in reference to sexual dimorphism, post-natal ontogenetic development, and geographical origin. We employed geometric morphometrics, a method which enables separate analysis of the structure’s shape and size. The sample included 325 mandibles from calves and yearlings of both sexes harvested in nine hunting management districts (HMD) in Slovenia. Because neither of the two age groups showed secondary sexual dimorphism in size and shape of the mandible, we regarded both sexes together. Analysis of ontogenetic allometry revealed that variability in shape during growth is closely related to the size of the mandible. The highest difference between both age-groups occurred in place where molars grow out. The difference in size and shape of the mandibles of calves and yearlings was present in all hunting management districts. Analysis of geographic variability revealed that animals from Pomursko HMD had the largest mandibles. Red deer also display variability in the shape of mandible. The largest difference in the mandibular shape in calves was found between Pomursko and Notranjsko HMD, while in yearlings the largest difference was noted between Gorenjsko and Pomursko, and Gorenjsko and Primorsko HMD, respectively.
