Title:Illumination in the Margins of Medieval Manuscripts from Charterhouses in the Slovenian Territory
Abstract:Until now, there has not been a study of marginal illumination in medieval manuscripts from charterhouses in the Slovenian territory. Hence, this thesis introduces a list of known illuminated medieval manuscripts from the charterhouses of Žiče, Jurklošter, Bistra, and Pleterje, with marginal illumination being its primary focus. Most illuminated manuscripts come from Žiče, whereas most manuscripts with marginal illumination come from Bistra. A more meticulous analysis of two manuscripts, ‘Summa de iure canonico’ (Ljubljana, NUK, Ms 33) and ‘De civitate Dei’ (Ljubljana, NUK, Ms 2), has confirmed the connection between the text and its accompanying images. In ‘De civitate Dei’, this can be said for most images, whereas in ‘Summa de iure canonico’ only for some, since most images are characterised as different types of markers. Based on these observations, the thesis also offers a comment on the problem of interpreting profane motifs in medieval manuscripts, in relation to our codices. The analysis of our manuscripts’ illumination includes some new comparisons, namely certain foreign illuminated manuscripts, which we could perhaps regard as models. On the basis of a critical assessment of certain findings in technical literature, the thesis also re-poses the question of the authorship of ‘De civitate Dei’.
