Title:Consumer recognition and understanding of prepacked food labels among students and staff at the faculty of agriculture and life sciences
Abstract:Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011 specifies which information must be present on products. Besides the mandatory labels, we can also find additional labels, which describe a higher quality of products or special treatment of products during processing. The amount of information on the products is immense, which allows consumers to choose the one that suits them the most, but they often do not understand or recognise them. The aim of this thesis was to find out if employees and students of Faculty of Agriculture and Life Sciences know which labels must be placed on products, if they know any additional labels and how often they buy products with them. A statistical difference appeared between students and employees in recognising and understanding the EU organic logo, while the other marks were equally recognised and understood. Results also showed that gender partially effects the understanding of labels. Students from the masters programme Food safety in the Agri-food Chain did not statistically deviate from other students. Employees and students have similarly decided to purchase products with additional labels.
