Title:Analysis of traffic safety of cyclists in Slovenia between 2009 and 2018
Abstract:In recent years, the focus in Europe and in Slovenia has been on the use of sustainable means of transport including cycling. Together with pedestrians, cyclists are the most vulnerable traffic participants. Consequently, cycling accidents often result in serious injuries or even in death. This is the reason why it is important to ensure adequate road safety for them. The master's thesis deals with the safety of cyclists in Slovenia. We have analysed road accidents involving cyclists between 2009 and 2018. The results show that the number of cycling accidents and bicycle fatalities has slightly decreased over the years. Most cyclists have suffered minor injuries in the road accidents. The most common causes of the accidents in which cyclists have died are non-compliance with priority rules, speeding or improper direction of travel. Most cycling accidents happen during the day, the majority of the cyclists have not been wearing a safety helmet and have not been under the influence of alcohol. According to the results of the analysis of the traffic accidents, we have proposed possible improvements in the field of cycling infrastructure planning and advanced vehicle safety systems, use of suitable bicycle and cyclist equipment together with trainings and campaigns in preventive measures.
