Abstract:V zadnjih letih so družbena omrežja postala sestavni del sveta in danes igrajo vitalno vlogo v vsakdanjem življenju posameznika.

Title:The relationship between Instagram use, self-presentation and subjective well-being
Abstract:In the recent years, social networking sites have become an integral part of the world and today they play a vital role in an individual's daily life. This research was focused on how Instagram usage relates to (online) self-presentation and subjective well-being. In this context, the focus was on the process of social comparison. The survey involved 286 Instagram users with an average age of 26. The following tools were used to collect the data: Facebook Intensity Scale – FBIS, Self presentation on Facebook questionnaire – SPFBQ, Facebook Social Comparison Scale, Upward and Downward Appearance Comparison Scales and Satisfaction With Life Scale – SWLS. Instruments were customised for the Instagram context. Based on the existing research and the expected trends, the assumption was that both active and intensive use of Instagram relates positively to self-presentation, and that passive use of Instagram relates negatively to the user's subjective well-being. The link between social comparisons was predicted to be weaker for users who are satisfied with their lives. The results showed that active, passive, and intensive use relates positively to self-presentation; and that individuals who use Instagram less intensively also use downward social comparison less often. Similar difference was found in the upward social comparison. The frequency of social comparison related positively to self-presentation. It was also found that greater intensity use of Instagram predicts more frequent use of upward social comparison, whereas in contrast, higher satisfaction with life predicts less frequent use of upward social comparison. For the most part, the results did not show the expected trends. Active and passive use did not significantly relate to life satisfaction as a measure of subjective well-being. There were also no significant relation between the number of followers and life satisfaction.
