Abstract:Magistrsko delo obravnava življenje Leopolda Miheliča, slovenskega duhovnika, profesorja verouka in izseljenca v Združenih državah Amerike, med njegovim rojstvom leta 1906 in njegovo smrtjo 2001. Lovrenca) v Clevelandu (Ohio).

Title:The Slovenian Immigrant Catholic priest Leopold Mihelič (1906-2001)
Abstract:The master thesis deals with life of Leopold Mihelič, a Slovenian priest, professor of religion and emigrant to the United States of America, between his birth in 1906 and death in 2001. Mihelič was born on 3 October 1906 in Grajena near Ptuj. He went to elementary in Sv. Jurij v Slovenskih goricah and later enrolled in classical grammar school in Maribor. Between 1928 and 1933 he studied theology in Maribor and was ordained as priest on 10 July 1932. Until the beginning of World War II in Yugoslavia, he worked as chaplain, honorary military priest and teacher of religion in Slovenska Bistrica. In 1941, he was put in assembly camps in Melje and Rajhenburg, and later made his way through Croatia to Serbia, where he taught religion at various schools in Belgrade and helped Slovenians, who lived there in exile. He returned to Slovenska Bistrica in 1945, but had to flee his homeland in May 1946, because his life was threatened. He made his way to Austria, where he spent several months in refugee camps Fürnitz and Kellerber, and later went to work as a priest for Slovenian Franciscan sisters in Hyeres on the southern French coast. In June 1950, he emigrated to the United States and worked as chaplain at the German parish Nativity of the Blessed Virgin Mary in Marathon, Wisconsin until 1955, when he accepted the position as chaplain at the Slovenian parish Holy Rosary in Denver, Colorado, where he became a resident priest in 1969 and remained in this position until retirement in 1977. In 1968, he also worked as chaplain at St. Lawrence parish in Cleveland, Ohio for six months. Throughout his life in the United States he made efforts to preserve Slovenian culture and language in Slovenian communities, and for that purpose organised many Slovenian classes. After retirement, he visited his relatives in Maribor every year, and also travelled to other European countries and around the world; he also remained active at his local parish community in Denver. In 1989 he suffered a stroke, that left him paralysed on the right side of his body for the rest of his life. In 1992, he moved permanently to his niece in Maribor, where he lived the remainder of his life. He died on 25 May 2001.
