Title:From Literary Work to Stage Speech - A linguistic Analysis of the Slovene Performance of Simon Stephens's Drama Birdland at the Slovene National Theatre Maribor (A Case Study)
Abstract:Due to the uniqueness of a stage moment, translating for theatre is one of the most difficult subtypes of translation, as the translator must be sensitive to the meaning of the written word and possess an exceptional linguistic sense. The language consultant, too, must demonstrate high proficiency in linguistics in regards to the respective configuration of the stage speech. This master’s thesis focuses on the process of constructing stage speech, from the selected text, through the translation to the final adaptation. The empirical part compares one chapter from Simon Stephens’s drama Birdland (Tisti občutek padanja), its Slovene translation and the stage speech with a focus on prosodic elements spoken by the actors. We have established that the Slovene translation was adequate, encompassing all key accentuations of the original. In addition, we have also determined that the director made only minor semantic and/or grammatical interventions. The translation was congruent with the original. The language consultant had no particular difficulty in maintaining consistence of the speech configuration. However, some minor and, in some passages, major semantic changes of the text were made in order to increase the eloquence of the speech, as well to accentuate the significance of the main topic within the dialogue.
