Doktorsko disertacijo sestavljata teoretični in empirični del.

Title:The model of dynamics market diversification as an instrument of firm internationalization and market growth
Abstract:The modern times are characterised by constant changes, which are reflected in both the society and economics. The changes are particularly dynamic in the field of international business. The rapid changes in the market and institutional environment, the technological progress and the diverse market structure force companies that aim to survive and create conditions for growth to adopt a dynamic transnational business expansion. The stagnation of economic growth in the Eurozone and the EU raises numerous questions regarding the possibilities of the choice of growth strategies in Slovenian companies and the compensation for the decreased demand for their products and services in the Eurozone and the EU. The fundamental goal of this doctoral dissertation is establishing how Slovenian companies that are part of the domestic institutional framework of the (post-)transition of the economic system and institutions are responding to the dynamic processes of globalisation, accelerated internationalisation and liberalisation of business. The doctoral dissertation is comprised of a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, we first define the research field or problem, which focuses on Slovenian companies’ excessive export dependence on only a few countries, the most important export partners and a relatively poor dispersion of export activities to strategic, quickly developing markets of the BRIC countries as well as other markets of rapidly developing national economies or regions. In the second chapter of the dissertation, we then present the key characteristics of the phenomenon of globalisation and internationalisation, analyse the regionalisation of the global economy, and explain the theories or models of internationalisation, namely the so-called Uppsala model, which belongs to the classical stage models of internationalisation, and the modern model of born-global companies. The third chapter contains a review of literature from the field of product and market diversification. The latter is also the central topic of the doctoral dissertation. After reviewing fundamental company growth strategies and defining the notion of diversification, we focus on studying the scientific findings on the motives for market diversification of business and the risk that this strategy poses to companies. This part includes an analysis of the relationship between market diversification and the company’s performance, and an establishment of strategic advantages of the companies that are based on product and market diversification also in connection with the connectivity of technologies that enable a quick flow of data and information and with this an easier overcoming of gaps in time and place. In the fourth chapter, we use the theoretical starting points to summarise individual contents and synthesise a theoretical model of dynamic market diversification as an instrument of internationalisation and company market growth. Companies aiming to achieve optimal business results have always faced numerous significant strategic challenges and decisions that have become even more demanding and important in the modern times of the accelerated globalisation of markets, the increasing presence and growing power of developing economies, the rapid development of digitalisation and other technological novelties. Although national borders are still an obstacle in international business, the globalisation of company markets has increasingly been encouraging companies to expand their business activities into foreign markets. In the empirical part of the doctoral dissertation, which is divided into the qualitative and quantitative part of the research, we test eight hypotheses. The qualitative part of the empirical research is a basis for establishing that the nature of market opportunities differs significantly from market to market, which demands that the companies be very adaptable and ingenious in business. An effective business model m
