Abstract:Tekmovanja predstavljajo enega izmed načinov preverjanja in ocenjevanja znanja ter omogočajo spremljanje razvoja dosežkov učenca in njegovih kognitivnih sposobnosti.

Title:The wiewpoints of experimental work in lower secondary school chemistry competition
Abstract:Competitions represent one of the methods of examining and assessing knowledge, and enable monitoring the development of students' achievements and their cognitive abilities. National competitions cover various fields of scientific disciplines, however, they all base on the valid school curricula when composing competition papers. School curricula for Chemistry lessons aims are directed to gaining basic chemistry knowledge that covers different teaching contents, developing complex and critical thinking as well as science literacy in its broadest meaning. Practical experimental work also plays an important role in this, as it is the crucial part of teaching chemistry on all levels. That is why it should also be included into Pregl Competitions. By doing so, the assessor would get a broader view of the student’s knowledge, logical thinking and scientific literacy. The final assessment would not only define the student’s cognitive abilities, but also their psychomotor abilities as a part of the assessment. Although Pregl Chemistry Competitions do not include practical work assessment, there are many tasks in the competition papers, which ask students to combine the theoretical facts and experimental work or at least imagine their execution. In our research paper, we focused only on the ‘theoretical experimental tasks’ that demand connecting the theoretical knowledge with the ideas and experiences with the practical execution. In our research that included 25,750 students in the sample, we compared the results of the theoretical experimental tasks at school competitions and the results of the whole exam paper. We established that the results in the former were poorer. It has been shown that the students who have done better at theoretical experimental tasks were more successful at national competitions. The results deviate only for 2016, where the performance in theoretical experimental tasks at school competition was better in comparison to the performance in solving the whole exam. In the second part of the analysis, we tried to establish the success in the performance in solving theoretical experimental tasks according to lower and higher order thinking skills by Bloom taxonomy. We established that the performance was better at tasks from lower categories of thinking skills in comparison to the performance in tasks from higher categories of thinking skills by Bloom.
