Abstract:Namen prispevka: Članek govori o tem, v kolikšni meri so osebe z intelektualnimi ovirami in težavami v duševnem zdravju v sistemu socialnega varstva sposobne govoriti in biti slišane.

Title:Oppressive Social Structures : The Case of People with Intellectual Disabilities and Problems in Mental Health
Abstract:Purpose: The article discusses the extent to which people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health in the social care system are able to speak and be heard. Design/Methods/Approach: In this article, people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health talk about their own experiences of oppression and life situations where they have no power to change anything, as matters affecting them are decided by others. Findings: The main finding of the research is that patronizing language is one of the main factors that keeps people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health at a disadvantage. The ability of an expert to communicate clearly, responsibly, without the assumption that the person is not telling the truth and with respect is key to preventing further abuse of people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health. Practical Implications: Through the narratives of people, the article presents the good and bad practices of communication with people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health, which is useful for all professionals who encounter people with intellectual disabilities and problems in mental health in their work and who have any decision-making power that directly affects the lives of these people. Originality/Value: This article represents an original research perspective that examines social relations from the perspective of social power and views social structure from the perspective of the oppressed, with the aim of finding ways that would allow the oppressed to speak and be heard in a significant way to the point that it makes a difference.
