Abstract:V magistrski nalogi opravimo varnostni pregled protokolov za pošiljanje e-pošte. Opisana je tudi ključna terminologija in infrastruktura za pošiljanje. Varnostna tveganja protokola SMTP so opisana podrobneje, kar je nadaljevano z analizo nadgradenj, ki te varnostne pomanjkljivosti naslavljajo. Več pozornosti je namenjeno protokolu MTA-STS, ki hkrati predstavlja hrbtenico implementacije posredniškega poštnega strežnika. Implementacijo funkcionalno in varnostno ovrednotimo s pomočjo zunanjih storitev ter simuliranega napada. Ugotovimo, da protokol MTA-STS sicer pripomore k izboljšanju varnosti prenosa e-pošte med strežniki, a vsebuje tudi ranljivost. Vzrok tiči v sami zasnovi protokola, kar lahko napadalec izkoristi za popolni izogib zaščite MTA-STS.

Title:Security review of protocols for email sending
Abstract:We perform a security review of protocols for email sending. First, we provide an overview of the key terminology and infrastructure. Focus is given to identification of security risks in the SMTP protocol. We continue with the analysis of upgrades that address the identified vulnerabilities. Emphasis is given to the MTA-STS protocol, being the focusing point in the implementation of the mail submission server. The implementation’s functionality and security are evaluated by third party services and a simulated attack. We determined that although the MTA-STS increases the security of inter-server email sending, a vulnerability is still present. The latter originates from the protocol’s design and can be exploited by an attacker to circumvent the protection of MTA-STS.
