Abstract:Področje obveznega cepljenja kljub aktualnosti tematike v Sloveniji še ni raziskano v veliki meri.

Title:The effect of Facebook comments exposure on the change of people`s opinion on vaccination: the role of attitudes toward vaccination and mental frames
Abstract:Even though compulsory vaccination is a topical issue, it remains largely under-researched in Slovenia. This Master’s thesis focuses on exploring the relationship between attitudes towards vaccination and decisiveness, closed-mindedness, beliefs in conspiracy theories and some demographic variables. The thesis also studies how exposure to different Facebook comments about vaccination influences the beliefs about vaccination and the desire to obtain further information about vaccination. The sample included 640 participants, who completed the online Parent Attitudes about Childhood Vaccines Survey, the Need for Closure Scale and the Generic Conspiracist Beliefs Scale. In the experimental part, the participants were exposed to one of the experimental conditions (a general article on vaccination, general positive comments, positive comments related to personal stories, general negative comments, negative comments related to conspiracy theories). The results of the study have shown the following: the attitudes of the participants towards vaccination in our sample are negatively correlated with the participants’ age and the five dimensions of beliefs in conspiracy theories; participants with extreme (positive or negative) attitudes towards vaccination achieve higher scores on the decisiveness scale than the participants with neutral attitudes towards vaccination; there is a statistically significant negative correlation between the desire for information and closed-mindedness; the participants who are undecided about vaccination wish to obtain more information about vaccination more often than the participants who have already formed their opinion about vaccination; also the participants with negative attitudes towards vaccination wish to obtain more information about vaccination more often in comparison with participants with positive attitudes towards vaccination. The experimental part of the research has shown that the majority of the participants did not change their opinion in all combinations of the conditions. The participants who are positively decided about vaccination and the participants with positive attitudes towards vaccination were more likely to change their opinion to an even more positive one, and positive comments were the major factor in changing their opinion about vaccination. The participants who are positively decided about vaccination and the participants with positive attitudes towards vaccination were shown to be the most likely to wish to obtain additional information about vaccination; the participants whose previous opinions about vaccination do not match the comments they read in the course of this research were also shown to want additional information.
