Title:The Slovene-American community in Cleveland after year 1991
Abstract:The master's thesis introduces the history of Slovene-American society in Cleveland metropolitan region after 1991. Scholarly research has been conducted based on Slovene-American ethnical newspapers and has been backed by professional literature. The thesis focuses on ethnical structures which the Slovene community in Cleveland has developed before 1991, which still continues to operate. The research is mostly based on the fifth generation of Americans of Slovene descent, who differ from original Slovene immigrants. There are no records of particularly big migration waves to the USA from Slovenia after 1991, therefore and as a result the biggest role in the Slovene-American communities is played of Americans with Slovene descent who live their »Slovenian lifes« at least during the weekends. Especially cherished members of the American-Slovene community after the year of 1991 are individuals who have achieved remarkable results in various fields of expertise. A chapter in this thesis is dedicated to politicians of Slovenian descent who have been active in the Cleveland metropolitan region even after 1991. Alongside the aforementioned politicians, there are also several Slovene descendants of cultural and scientific importance, including astronauts in this region. It is important to note that the Slovene community in Cleveland has stepped up when Slovenia needed them the most – in the year of 1991. They have played an important role in the recognition of Slovenia as a sovereign country by the United States of America on 7th of April in 1992. The American Slovenes have also kept watch on the entry of Slovenia into the NATO alliance, and the European Union.
