Title:The role of parents in the bedtime routine of children
Abstract:Good sleep is a precondition for the normal functioning of the human body. With it, we influence the health of every individual, especially children, so it plays an important role. Lack of sleep can negatively affect a child’s cognitive and physical development. The family has a significant influence on the sleeping habits of children, since it chooses a bedtime routine that shall suit both the child and the parents. In doing so, parents can choose from a variety of sleep techniques. The theoretical part of the diploma thesis presents various professional views of authors on the family and interpersonal relationships, and the importance of sleep. It also highlights important findings on sleep disorders and sleepless children. The role of the family in relaxing the child before bedtime and the importance of comforting habits are presented as well. The empirical part presents the results of an empirical research in which 59 female respondents and 55 male respondents participated. In the research, we were interested in how parents put their preschool children to sleep and what approaches of falling asleep they use according to their age and education. The obtained data were collected with survey questionnaires and analyzed with the SPSS statistical program. The data show that parents most often use reading fairy tales before going to bed and that they only sometimes seek professional help for a sleepless child. Most parents put their children to bed at the same time, as they are aware that a steady sleeping schedule in a child is very important.
