Title:With empathy to pro-environmental behavior: effects of empathic concern and type of the subject, for whom empathic concern is experienced, on pro-environmental behavior
Abstract:The Earth's endangered ecosystem calls for more sustainable behavior, which presents a challenge. The study aimed to discover whether empathy encourages pro-environmental behavior, with emphatic concern functioning as a promoting mediator. It furthermore attempted to see whether this is in any way affected by the type of subject (i.e. victim of environmental change), by examining the differences between two subjects, a juvenile and adult male. To this end, an experiment was conducted with a cohort of 80 young adults assigned to one of the four experimental groups: empathy elicited for juvenile subject, empathy elicited for adult subject, empathy not elicited for juvenile subject, empathy not elicited for adult subject. Empathy in participants was elicited by reading an article about the consequences and effects of environmental change; different types of pro-environmental behavior were measured. It was determined that eliciting empathy increases the amount of money donated to pro-environmental group and that emphatic concern mitigates the negative effects of empathy on pro-environmental behavioral intentions. This implies an interdependence of the observed effects of empathy and types of pro-environmental behavior. Recycling did not prove to be a sensitive enough task; the type of subject did not have an important effect on pro-environmental behavior. The study revealed a complexity of observed interrelations and has highlighted that the effect of empathy on pro-environmental behavior remains a promising research area, providing it includes research of multiple relevant factors.
