Abstract:Diplomsko delo predstavlja primerjavo med odprtokodnim procesnim simulatorjem DWSIM in procesnim simulatorjem Aspen Plus. V obeh omenjenih procesnih simulatorjih smo izvedli enake simulacije in primerjali rezultate. Najprej smo analizirali rezultate simulacije preproste separacije metanola iz vodne raztopine, kjer smo preizkusili tri različne termodinamske modele: NRTL, Peng-Robinson in UNIQAC.

Title:Open-Source process simulator DWSIM as an alternative to Aspen Plus
Abstract:The diploma paper draws the comparison between open-source chemical process simulator DWSIM and process simulator Aspen Plus. The diploma paper aimed to determine whether the open-source chemical process simulator DWSIM could represent an alternative to payable software package Aspen Plus and thus relieve the company of costs. DWSIM could also serve as a learning tool for young and inexperienced engineers. In both process simulators, we carried out the same simulations and compared the results. Firstly, we analysed the simulation results of a simple separation of methanol from an aqueous solution, where we tested three thermodynamic models: NRTL, Peng-Robinson and UNIQAC. In the simulation of a simplified process scheme of synthesis of dimethyl ether from methanol, in addition to comparing the obtained simulation results, we also carried out the sensitivity analysis. In the simulation of synthesis of dimethyl ether from methanol with the circulation of unreacted raw materials, we compared the analysis results only for the UNIQAC thermodynamic model. While creating process schemes, we found out that both process simulators are fairly easy to use. Due to its perfection, Aspen Plus is slightly more transparent and easier to use. The results show that the open-source process simulator DWSIM is comparable to the process simulator Aspen Plus by easier simulations. By more exacting or complex simulations, there occur not only differences in the results but also problems with the convergence of numerical algorithms. Despite that, we conclude, DWSIM has great potential. If the development of the simulator will proceed at this rate, it will become very competitive with the process simulator Aspen Plus.
