Abstract:V diplomski nalogi predstavimo kaj je neonaticid in kako se razlikuje od detomora in od umora otroka na splošno.

Title:Neonaticide – cause and prevention
Abstract:In this dissertation we explain what neonaticide is and how it differs from infanticide and from child murder in general. We present the development throughout history, as neonaticide was already present in ancient Greece and Rome. it is also known in all cultures around the world. We present and explain motives and possible reasons why a pregnant woman would think of committing neonaticide and what a typical perpetrator is supposed to look like. Although most perpetrators are young, single, and non-educated, there are cases of older, educated, employed, and married women. That is why we cannot represent and speak of a typical perpetrator. We also point out the difference between neonaticide and infanticide, as mental and personality disorders play a greater role in infanticide. We present the problem of denial and concealment of pregnancy, which are major indicators of a possible neonaticide. We also highlight the fact that neonaticide research alone is difficult, as many cases remain uncovered. In the following chapters, we look into prevention. The first step is to focus on preventing the pregnancy itself. This can be done through contraception and sex education. We then emphasize, that it is necessary to educate young people how to recognize the signs of pregnancy, and what options a particular country offers in the event of pregnancy when am individual would like to terminate it. We point out that in such cases it is also necessary to establish trust in loved ones, as there are alternative options that potential perpetrators are unaware of. It varies from country to country but many offer options such as safe haven, incubators for newborns and anonymous birth. We present these options and show how they work and how they can be effective. Finally, we present the situation in Slovenia, how many neonaticides or infanticides we have in our country, and we answer the question if the state offers the possibility of such alternatives as we learned about in previous chapters.
