Title:The Influence of a Novel Object on the Behaviour of Fallow Deer (dama dama) in an Enclosure
Abstract:The fallow deer, like other domesticated deer species, represents a typical example of species in the early phase of domestication. Contrary to fully domesticated species, there is a lack in research on their behaviour in farming conditions, as well as their response to changes in the environment. In this context, the novel object test provides a great deal of behavioural information in a short period of time. This research aimed to closely examine the behavioural pattern changes as a response to a novel object in the environment of fallow deer (Dama dama). A herd of animals was observed in the most frequently visited part of the enclosure using a trail-camera. With intermediate controls (no novel object) the novel objects were put alternately into the enclosure. The results showed that the occurrence frequency and duration of retention significantly dropped when novel objects were presented. The resting activity patterns changed as well as pasture. It is important to highlight that an animal-shaped novel object (toy horse) caused complete absence of animals during most times of the day in the observed area. They were only spotted in the early morning and the evening when control frequencies were also highest. In conclusion, the novel object can present a distraction that may induce stress in fallow deer, therefore, special attention should be paid when implementing changes in a breeding environment.
