Title:The Role of Gender in Learning Mathematics from the Perspective of Different generations
Abstract:In connection with the learning of mathematics, many stereotypes have spread among us in the past, which can affect an individual's performance in mathematics and influence their future career. The theoretical part of the thesis presents affective aspects of learning mathematics, learning and teaching mathematics in the past and present, self-regulation of learning, gender differences in educational achievements, results of existing PISA and TIMSS research in the field of mathematics at the gender level, previous research on the influence of gender on learning mathematics, stereotypes about mathematics and the role of adults in shaping attitudes, beliefs or stereotypes about mathematics. In the empirical part of the thesis, the research is presented in more detail, the purpose of which was to examine the opinion of different generations about the influence of gender on learning mathematics. The thesis considers whether there were any related differences between different generations of participants (from elementary school children to the elderly over 60 years of age). A descriptive and causal non-experimental methods were used for the study. The research was based on a non-random sampling of 202 persons of different generations. The data was collected through a questionnaire. The results showed that there are no significant statistical differences between female and male participants regarding their opinion on how gender influences the learning of mathematics. Only when asked whether girls or boys were more suitable for the profession of a scientist, it turned out that more men (42.9%) than women (21.6%) believe that boyes are more suitable for the profession of a scientist. When comparing opinions with respect to the age of the participants, it turned out that the opinion of different generations about the influence of gender on learning mathematics differed. Most participants, regardless of age, believe that both girls and boys are equally successful in learning mathematics, but as many as 32.3% of the youngest participants (under the age of 20) believe that girls are more successful in mathematics. In comparison with older participants, the younger are more convinced that boys are more adept at using a computer and that boys are more suitable for the profession of a scientist as well as for the profession of a computer scientist. In comparison with the youngest age group, a greater part of participants from older age groups believe that according to teachers, boys are more successful in mathematics.
