Abstract:Učitelji v slovenskih šolah zelo redko vključujejo žive živali v poučevanje bioloških vsebin.

Title:Influence of experimental work on knowledge and attitude towards live animals in preschool and elementary education students
Abstract:Slovenian school teachers rarely include living animals when teaching biological content. Possible reasons for not including living animals could be insufficient knowledge gained during the bachelor studies and/or attitude towards that type of teaching. For this reason we assessed if experimental work with living animals influences the knowledge and attitude towards them in students of elementary school and preschool education. Through the results we wanted to establish positive view on the inclusion of laboratory and experimental work with living organisms in the class. In order to gather the results, we planned and performed two classes with animal content. These were providing same information about the animals, but were delivered through two different methods. In both cases the results were gathered via a questionnaire that students solved before and after the class. For the one half of the students (56) we held a class based on experimental work, whereas for the other half (55) we held a »classical« frontal class. Experimental work included living animals – house mouse (Mus musculus), argentinian wood roach (Blaptica dubia) and giant african snail (Achantina fulica). The results have shown that students who participated in the frontal class gained more knowledge than those in the experimental class. However, students who performed experiments with the animals are more keen to including the living animals in their teaching than the students who attended frontal class, meaning their attitude to working with the animals has also changed. Based on our results, we suggest that, during their university studies, future teachers should gain as much direct experience with living animals as possible. Our assumption is that through the university experience and development of positive attitude we influence the students to transfer those into their future work.
