Abstract:Magistrsko delo raziskuje možnosti razumevanja maternih govorcev dveh slovanskih jezikov – slovenskega in češkega –, kadar se sporazumevata vsak v svojem maternem jeziku. V prvem delu zaključnega dela je predstavljen teoretični pregled jezikovnega pojava, imenovanega medjezikovno razumevanje, s pomočjo opredelitve pojava, zgodovinskega orisa in morebitnih prednosti in slabosti. Predstavljena so gradiva, vprašalnik, raziskovalne metode in vzorec.

Title:Intercomprehension of Slovene and Czech
Abstract:The Master's thesis explores the possibilities of understanding native speakers of two Slavic languages (Slovene and Czech) when they are communicating in their own respective mother tongues. The first part of the thesis introduces a theoretical overview of this linguistic phenomenon called mutual intelligibility by defining the phenomenon, showing its history and potential advantages and disadvantages. Introduction of the Slavic language family follows, and the Western and Southern branches are thoroughly investigated, especially Slovene and Czech. The second part contains a detailed analysis of the empirical research, which was performed to investigate whether or not Slovene and Czech are mutually intelligible and if so to what extent. Materials, questionnaires, research methods and sample are also described. An in-depth analysis of the entire questionnaire follows, and the results of the Slovene and Czech group are given. On the basis of the analysis of the results, a conclusion is reached. It proposes that native speakers of Slovene and Czech are capable of understanding a written text in the target language up to B1 level, as defined in CEFR.
