Title:Paramedics knowledge of mechanical ventilation of a patient in prehospital environment
Abstract:Mechanical ventilation is an important procedure in the care of a critically ill or injured person. The patient must be observed throughout the mechanical ventilation by the paramedic, whose main task is to observe and prevent complications of mechanical ventilation, monitor a patient and assist the doctor. Therefore, the knowledge of paramedics is extremely important for good and high-quality care of critically ill patients. The thesis aimed to present the role; course of work and knowledge of paramedics in the care of the patient on a mechanical ventilator.A descriptive method was used for the theoretical part of the diploma paper, and in the empirical part, a qualitative methodology was used. For that purpose, a survey among the paramedics from a rescue post in northeastern Slovenia was conducted. The research showed that the knowledge of the paramedics is appropriate. Above all, they showed good knowledge regarding practical issues. However, a problem appeared when it came to them presenting knowledge concerning the complications of mechanical ventilation, where respondents had to list possible complications.Mechanical ventilation is an indispensable method of ventilating critically ill patients. Paramedics are required and expected to know how to operate the ventilator when the patient's condition requires so.
