Title:Encouraging independent research of children with the birds research box
Abstract:Independence is a characteristic that brings many benefits to a child in his or her life, and an ability that should be developed in children more often. One of the most effective ways to develop the independence is to use research boxes, which primary form of solving tasks is individual work. The purpose of the diploma work was to introduce children to the Birds Research Box and the independent work, and to find out how children first commence the tasks of the Research Box, which are given with a concrete research material, with the help of picture working cards at their first contact. 20 children, aged 5 and 6 years, individually operated with the Research Box. Of these, 10 children were girls and 10 children were boys. The results showed that children were successful in solving tasks in 85 % and that they were independent in 57 %. Therefore, we can conclude that the Birds Research Box was suitable for children at this age. As expected, there were problems in solving the working card with an identification key, which belongs to the one of more demanding natural science procedures. It is the only card where the failure in solving exceeded the success by 10 %. Children of both sexes were motivated and interested in the natural sciences contents of the Research Box while solving the tasks.
