Title:Absorption, Dissociation and Suggestibility as Predictors of Hypnotic Depth
Abstract:Hypnosis is used for treating physical and mental issues and for research purposes, however, the depth of hypnosis varies between people. Hypnotic depth can be explained by psychological, neurophysiological, environmental, and other factors, yet there is no instrument that would allow predicting hypnotic depth without preceding induction. The following MA thesis explores the possibility to predict hypnotic depth using the integrative model of Cardeña and Spiegel (1991), which emphasizes the role of absorption, dissociation, and suggestibility. We applied TAS, DES, and SSS questionnaires and invited participants to an online workshop. There, we presented hypnosis, performed it, and obtained participants' experience and depth data on LSS and FHDI. The final sample consisted of 103 participants, of whom 88 were women with a mean age of 29.8 years. Participants experienced a pleasant, relaxing state of consciousness that was different from the state before hypnosis. The results on both measures of hypnosis depth were significantly related, but the integrative model did not explain them. A professional workshop has been designed within the research that could be used as an intervention regarding false beliefs about hypnosis and unfounded fears or for relaxation. We concluded that qualitative data could offer a new approach to hypnosis research. Furthermore, it would also be necessary to examine how hypnotic depth relates to other factors and whether it predicts the effectiveness of hypnotherapy.
