Title:Sharenting on Facebook from the perspective of children's safety and privacy
Abstract:The daily lives of web users are increasingly being transferred to social networking sites. These sites are a tool for interaction and communication with others on the basis of shared content, but they also satisfy a range of needs for active participation within society and for the creation of one's own (online) identity. Facebook, as the social network with the most active users, also plays an important role in the daily life of many families. In fact, researchers have observed a trend towards sharing child-related content on this and other social networking sites. Some parents may knowingly or unknowingly share a large amount of their own personal data as well as their children's personal data through their online activities. This creates new opportunities for child victimisation and raises questions about respecting children's privacy and autonomy in the creation of their own digital footprint. Our findings show that parents rarely share child-related content on Facebook, while a clear majority observe that other parents share more of this type of content. A certain proportion of parents also share photographs of their children that could embarrass them later on, and posts that reveal some of their children's personal data. Parents of younger children are more likely to participate in Facebook parent groups, sharing certain personal information about their children. They agree that sharing child-related content can lead to risks, in particular the risk of data theft by third parties. On average, parents interact with less than half of their Facebook friends and use basic privacy settings on Facebook.
