Title:Simulation model of an intraaortic balloon pump
Abstract:Introduction: The intraaortic balloon pump (IABP) was introduced in the early 1960s as a treatment for severe heart failure and cardiogenic shock. It is still a common method of treating emergencies in intensive care units. Methods: This master's thesis used quantitative methods to create an experimental simulation model of an intraaortic balloon pump. Further to this, it includes a section in which we inquired with our colleagues as to the typical variables of the device. Results: The results showed that treatment with IABP provided effective support to the heart muscle. Having favourable hemodynamic effects, it improved the cardio-circulatory function of the patient. However, the inquiry among colleagues failed to convince us that they had acquired enough information and expertise to use the IABP effectively. Thus, we created a learning simulation model that will serve to present and demonstrate the use of the IABP. Discussion and conclusion: The use of the IABP requires specific knowledge, as it is not an everyday used method of treatment. Based on our findings, we propose additional training for effective and efficient treatment of patients with IABP, utilizing the simulation model that we developed for this purpose.
