Title:Aesthetic labour in tourism - An ethical dilemma
Abstract:The thesis discusses aesthetic labour as a concept which represents the claim that service workers are no longer required to just smile and be polite, but also to be »pleasing to the eye«. In the service sector, look based hiring and “nurturing” the physical appearance of the workers once they are in organization, are increasingly becoming a key part of the organizational success. Regarding to that, a new term has been developed in the world, called “lookism”, which means discrimination based on a physical appearance. “Looking good and sounding right", which is the main slogan of the concept of aesthetic labour, raises many questions regarding the ethics of this concept. Accordingly, the thesis explored the moral attitudes and arguments of tourism employees on the issue of this concept, relying on four normative ethical theories – ethical egoism, ethical relativism, utilitarianism and Kantian ethics. Five focus groups were interviewed in three and four star hotels in Bihać. The results of the research have showed that employees in hotels mostly support the theory of ethical egoism in favor of the employer.
