Title:Anaerobic hop decomposition - temperature curve course and nutritional value comparison before and after the procedure according to different additives
Abstract:Hop biomass after harvest (leaves and vines) is a valuable source of organic matter and nutrients for returning to agricultural land. At the Slovenian Institute of Hop Research and Brewing, as part of the European LIFE BioTHOP project, which introduces a circular economy into hop growing, we set up an experiment at Jelen and Gajšek Farms. It was conducted after hop harvest in 2019 to study the process of anaerobic decomposition of hop biomass after harvest, intertwined with PLA twine, with different additives (chicken manure and algae and bentonite preparation) in comparison to control (without additives). We monitored the temperature during the degradation process under black foil and compared the C/N ratio and nutrient content at the beginning and at the end of the process after 5 months. The temperature threshold for biodegradable PLA twine degradation was reached in the treatment with added algae and bentonite and in the treatment with added chicken manure. Additions of chicken manure and algae and bentonite preparation in heaps indicated a narrower C/N ratio at the end of composting compared to control. In the heap with the addition of chicken manure, a higher phosphorus content was indicated at the end of decomposition, compared to the control pile and the pile with added preparation of algae and bentonite. Potassium content increased significantly in all heaps with decomposition. PLA hop twines degraded in 5 months within anaerobic process very good in all treatments.
