Title:Forensic examination of injuries caused by firearms
Abstract:Forensic analysis of injuries with firearms is a set of procedures that experts within areas of forensic medicine follow in dealing with gunshot wounds regardless of the type of firearm, with which the injury was caused. The process of treating death as a consequence of a gunshot wound includes not only the autopsy of the deceased, but also the knowledge of wound ballistics, physics and other complementary expertise with which we intertwine the method of investigation. Forensic medicine and forensics complement each other in the investigation of injuries and deaths due to the use of firearms. Forensic medicine deals with the study of the manner and mechanism of injury, assessment of shooting distance, characteristics of gunshot wounds and the cause of death, while forensic science deals withtype of weapon, ammunition, search for suspects, and collecting of informations and notifications. To carry out the procedure correctly adequate protection of traces and objects must be ensured during the investigation and the level of professionalism must be maintained. Gunshot injuries are caused by different types of firearms. In practice, investigators come across a diverse range of firearms, from homeassembled or remade to the factory produced. Engaged with the movement of projectile in the weapon, outside of it and until the moment the projectile hits the target is ballistics. Ballistics is a science that studies movement of projectiles inside and outside the weapon, thus covering, among other things, the ballistics of the wound, ie. study of movement the projectile makes after penetration into human tissue. Taking into account the extent of the wound, it is determined whether the shot was fired fromlong-barreled weapon (extensive tissue destruction) or short-barreled weapon. Correctly set procedure of investigating suicide or murder with firearm has various indications taken into account, with which investigators define the type of deed. Suicides typically result in injuries to parts of the body that are more easily accessible to the person killing themselves, and in murders, shots are often fired at vital organs or parts of the body that are inaccessible to the suicide.
