Title:Chemical recycling of textile composite material with predominant polyamide 6 content
Abstract:The problem of the large amount of polymer waste faced by today´s society needs to be addressed as a whole, and with some out-of-the-box thinking. Therefore, this master thesis aims to investigate the efficiency of chemical recycling of textile composite material with a predominant content of polyamide 6. We focused on alkaline and neutral hydrolysis and the method of dissolving polyamide 6 in formic acid at a boiling temperature. The influence of the reaction conditions on the neutral hydrolysis product was studied. In addition, an effective way to insulate end products was looked for. Depending on the reaction mixture properties, we used the following methods: rotary vacuum evaporation, dissolution in distilled water, or a combination of dissolution in formic acid and precipitation. Despite the fact, that we didn´t achieve complete depolymerization of polyamide 6, we still got very promising results in a form of our final products. Alkaline hydrolysis has proven to be the least suitable method. Better results were obtained with neutral hydrolysis. The results showed, that by increasing the mass ratio of reaction in neutral hydrolysis reaction, from 1:10 to 1:50, a higher degree of PA6 depolymerization can be achieved. At the same time, it is also important to choose the appropriate reaction time. In our case, with a mass ratio of 1:10 and the reaction temperature of 250°C, this turned out to be 30 or 60 minutes. However, dissolution in a formic acid has proven to be the most effective method of depolymerization, as well as the isolation method of end products.
