Title:Use of social media by preschool children
Abstract:In the modern society, children are becoming more and more exposed to different media, especially social media, which have an increasing effect on children. Exposure to social media can educate and entertain children, but it can also have a harmful effect on their development. This paper comprises a theoretical and an empirical part. In the theoretical part, we focused on social media in general, before delving more deeply into social media channels, especially three types, which were later used in the empirical part of the paper. The empirical part presents results of a research on the use of social media in children aged between four and six, with the research sample comprising their parents. The data were collected by conducting a survey and processed with the SPSS program. We wanted to determine what social media channels children use, how much time they spend on an individual social media channel, and whether their parents impose any restrictions on this use and which. It was determined that children mostly use YouTube and play online games, but devote less time to virtual worlds, and that parents almost always restrict their access in certain ways. The results also showed that children spend very little time per week for the afore-mentioned social media channels.
