Title:Modern history of judo
Abstract:Judo is a martial art that has been part of the Olympic family since the 1964 Tokyo Olympics. In recent decades, judo has undergone rapid development and is now present on all continents and in almost all countries around the globe. This is also supported by the fact that competitors from more than 150 countries regularly participate in world championships. According to some data, judo is practiced by about 25 million people worldwide. In Japan, for example, it is among the most popular sports and the sport with the most trophies won. In countries like Russia, France, South Korea and Japan, judo is part of the curriculum and is taught in primary schools. The beginnings of judo date back to the 19th century, when a Japanese man called Jigoro Kano derived a new martial art from jujitsu. Jigoro Kano had a vision that judo would one day be one of the leading martial arts, and that vision came true. This diploma thesis discusses the beginnings of judo and the development and spread of judo over the years. As judo gained in popularity around the world, it also found its way to Slovenia in the 1960s. Part of the diploma thesis describes the history of Slovenian judo from its beginning to the present day, when there are 76 judo clubs and around 5,000 competitors in Slovenia. Given the achievements from 2002, when Slovenia won its first medals at the European Judo Championships thanks to Petra Nareks and Raša Srake Vukovič, to the first Olympic medal won by Urška Žolnir in Athens in 2004, after which Slovenia’s medal-winning streak has continued to this day, judo is without doubt one of the sports with most trophies won in Slovenia.
