Abstract:Osnovni namen diplomskega dela je orisati uporabo elementov vojaške obveščevalne dejavnosti v kontekstu ameriške vojne za neodvisnost in ugotoviti, ali so ti odločilno prispevali k zmagi Američanov. Zagotovo so jih uporabili le Američani.

Title:Military intelligence in the American war for independence
Abstract:The primary goal of this final assignment is to present the elements of military intelligence employed during the American war for independence and to find out whether the use of them had played a significant role in the American victory. The causes and course of the war are explained, as its consequences significantly influenced countries around the world. American and British approaches to the wartime use of spies are described. Lastly these differing approaches are compared through the lens of The Art of War, a book authored by a Chinese strategist Sun Tzu. Based on the studied records it has been concluded that the Americans, as well as the British have often used covert methods of operating and gaining information during the war. However it would appear that the Americans were more inclined to employ the use of deception for more significant tactical moves. The use of military intelligence was far more challenging for the British. Among their generals the usage of spies for military purposes was considered dishonorable and unnecessary. A conclusion is drawn that the use of covert methods of operating and gaining information had in fact made a decisive contribution to the victory of the Americans. Finally it was shown that only the Americans used all five types of spies defined in The Art of War by Sun Tzu. So far no evidence has been uncovered that the British employed the so called »dead spy« in the course of war.
