Title:The importance of leg compression and prevention of venous thromboembolism in gynecologic surgery
Abstract:Venous thrombosis is the result of partial or complete occlusion of a vein by a clot, mostly localized in the veins of the lower limbs. When venous thrombosis is accompanied by pulmonary embolism, it is collectively referred to as venous thromboembolism (VTE). Patients undergoing major oncogynecological surgery are amongst most at risk, and the aim of this literature review is to investigate the importance of leg compression and the prevention of VTE in gynecological surgery. As part of the final work, we performed a systematic review, analyzing and synthesizing the literature around this very subject. The methodology and research is conducted by reviewing foreign sources dealing with the topic around the importance of leg compression and prevention of VTE in gynecological surgery, following the guidelines of PRISMA. We analyzed 5 articles that met the selected criteria, and also showed this in the table with the characteristics of the identified studies. We found that oncogynaecological patients need dual prothrombotic protection (mechanical and antithrombotic drugs) to prevent VTE. VTE is a major public health problem because it is often the cause of prolonged hospitalization of patients, and consequently higher medical costs. The incidence of VTE can be reduced with the right preventive measures. It is also cruical to identify VTE in time, and we sugest more VTE education, or targeted education for doctors and nurses.
