Abstract:Zgodnje regulacijske težave predstavljajo dejavnik tveganja za dolgoročne vedenjske in čustvene težave v odraslosti, še posebej za izogibajoče osebnostne lastnosti, povezane s socialnim umikom. Dodatno so se spremembe v intrinzični funkcijski konektivnosti dorzalno medialne insule in dorzalne amigdale negativno povezovale s kvaliteto odraslih vrstniških odnosov.

Title:Connection of early regulatory problems with changes in the allostatic-interoceptive brain system and peer relationships in adulthoodd
Abstract:Early regulatory problems represent risk for behavioral and emotional problems in adulthood, especially for avoid personality traits that are associated with social withdrawal. However, it remains unexplored whether regulatory problems in the first years of life are related to problems in social functioning in adulthood. The key objective of the master's thesis was to determine whether adults with a history of regulatory problems have lower quality peer relationships in adulthood compared to the control group and whether these social problems can be associated with changes in allostatic-interoceptive brain system. We analyzed data from a Bavarian longitudinal study in which adults (mean age 28 years; 50 % women) with (n = 42) and no (n = 70) history of early regulatory problems were participants in a semi-structured qualitative interview, completed a self-assessment measurement questionnaire to measure quality of peer relationships in adulthood and participated in a study of resting-state functional magnetic resonance imaging to measure changes in intrinsic functional connectivity of brain regions that are supporting the allostatic-interoceptive system. The results showed that adults with early regulatory problems have lower quality peer relationships and increased intrinsic functional connectivity of brain areas that support the allostatic-interoceptive system and social behavior. Changes in intrinsic functional connectivity were greater in adults with multiple and persistent regulatory problems, compared with those that only have either persistent or multiple regulatory problems. Additionally, changes in intrinsic functional connectivity of the dorsal medial insula and dorsal amygdala were negatively associated with the quality of adult peer relationships. The increased intrinsic functional connectivity of the dorsal medial insula with some other brain regions of the allostatic-interoceptive system has been shown to represent a mediator of association between early regulatory problems and the quality of adult peer relationships. The research makes an important contribution to understanding the brain mechanisms that are in the background of social problems of adults with early regulatory problems and to developing effective support strategies for establishing and maintaining social interactions in adulthood.
