Title:Inffluence of feather structure and additives on the removal of heavy volatile lipophilic substances
Abstract:As a waste, feathers are undoubtedly sufficient in quantity, easily accessible and inexpensive, and also boast many physicochemical properties, which can be used to their advantage for various applications. By reusing waste feathers, the resulting amount of waste thus contributes to the development of more environmentally friendly products. The purpose of the master's thesis was to investigate the possibility of using waste feathers as an adsorbent material for the removal of volatile lipophilic substances (eg. removal of oil spills into the aquatic environment). We focused mainly on the influence of the feather structure itself on the adsorption capacity and further studied it by adding two different zeolites. The essence of the addition of zeolites was also the final handling of the adsorbed oil, as we also wanted to improve the quality of the adsorbed oil for further processing or use of the generated waste (eg for thermal purposes (heating)). Karl-Fisher titration, ATR-FTIR spectroscopy, EDXRF X-ray fluorescence spectroscopy and goniometry were used, but the latter was unsuccessful due to the inability to prepare a suitable sample for analysis due to the characteristics of the samples. The adsorption properties of the materials and composits were determined in accordance with the ASTM F726-12 standard. Based on the obtained results, we found that the structure of the feathers significantly affects the adsorption ability, where we obtained better results in cut feathers, as it has a larger active surface and better arrangement of the material compared to whole feathers. We also found that both materials in which we packed the adsorbent material are suitable, but the cotton material is more efficient compared to the viscose fabric due to the structure itself (denser weaving), as it adsorbs and also retains more adsorbed oil. Comparing the two materials, the use of cotton is also a more environmentally friendly material in terms of the final treatment of the waste generated. With the addition of zeolites, the mass of adsorbed oil decreased in all cases, compared to composites prepared only with feathers. Zeolites also did not contribute to the adsorption of impurities (heavy metals and other elements) from the adsorbed oil, at most substances present in the individual materials of composites were eliminated into the oil. Thus, in conclusion, we can conclude that the compostie of cut feathers and cotton, without the addition of zeollites, proved to be the most suitable as an adsorption agent fort he removal of heavy volatile lipophilic substances.
