Title:Preparation of children with celiakia for endoscopic examination
Abstract:Introduction: We focused on the diagnosis and treatment of celiac disease in a child and the important role of the nurse in preparing the child and their parents for the performance of endoscopy. Methods of work: As a research instrument a quantitative methodology and a questionnaire were used. The research sample was non-random. In the survey participated two groups’ children over the age of 10 who understood the questions asked and parents of children with celiac disease. 164 respondents participated. We used descriptive statistics. The presented graphs we interpreted textually. We used the method of content analysis to analyse open-ended survey questions. Results: 164 respondents participated in the research. The average age was 36.8 years. Most participants were on an endoscopic examination for the second time. 58% of participants declare that they did not receive physical preparation. Those who received mental as well as physical preparation said that 70% of them were prepared for examination by a nurse. Half of all participants agree that they understood the questions, the other half share different opinions from clarity to incomprehensibility. Discussion and conclusion: In preparing a child for endoscopy, parents, child, doctor and nurse share equal importance in preparation for the procedure. The most important task of the nurse and the doctor is to gain trust through conversation, to establish a good interpersonal relationship and to inform the parents and the child well enough about the preparation for the examination, to successfully perform the procedure and to obtain consent. The research showed that children and parents should be better informed, as well as that they should pay better attention to the mental and physical preparation of the child before the examination in order to reduce the fear of the procedure.
