| Abstract: | Introduction: Several Sulfurimonas species have been isolated from sulfidic marine habitats over the years. In addition, many 16S rRNA sequences related to Sulfurimonas strains were identified in chemically distinct environments. The two recently discovered strains S. marisnigri SOZ1T and S. baltica GD2T were investigated in detail in the context of this master thesis. S. marisnigri SOZ1T was sampled in 2013 from the Black Sea at the lower boundary of the suboxic zone where hydrogen sulfide (H2S) was just above the detection limit. S. baltica GD2T was isolated in 2016 from the Baltic Sea at a depth of 225 m where anoxic but, not sulfidic waters were present.
Methods: Quantitative methodology was used to show gene abundances in the sulfur cycle and sqr distribution. All the necessary data were analyzed with different bioinformatics tools, mainly Prokka, Diamond, MAFFT, FastTree, ITOL, EDGAR, R/Complex-Heatmap and represented by tables and figures.
Results: Based on phylogeny, pangenome analysis and sox cluster comparisons, it was confirmed that S. baltica GD2T and S. marisnigri SOZ1T are closely related, they both share the same set of sox genes and phylogenetically similar sox clusters.
Discussion and conclusion: Within this research and all the analysis that were performed no major differences between S. baltica GD2T and S. marisnigri SOZ1T compared with other Sulfurimonas strains were detected. It is possible that niche differentiation between these two organisms is conducted by unknown genes, however more in-depth analysis is required to elucidate the differences between these organisms. Furthermore, it is necessary to perform expression analysis in addition to genomic analysis to figure out which genes are active and under which conditions. |
