Title:Loneliness of residents in the nursing homes
Abstract:Introduction: Loneliness is an international public health issue, which especially affects the ever-aging society across the world. Loneliness is often present in the elderly. Loneliness is defined as a symptom of problems connected to mental health, however, in the elderly, it is becoming an illness that has its own epidemiological, phenomenological, and etiological reasons. The purpose of this thesis is to present findings through a systematic review of scientific literature, find the most effective interventions for the purpose of decreasing loneliness for the elderly in nursing homes. Methods: The review of scientific literature in English was conducted in the following databases: PubMed, CINAHL, and SAGE. The PRISMA approach with a flow diagram was used to present the search process. Data was analysed and synthesised using thematic analysis. Results: Our findings show that activities for loneliness prevention in the elderly also improve social interaction, communication, interpersonal relations, the well-being of residents, improvement of satisfaction with care in the nursing homes, feeling of safety and happiness. Many residents gain new experiences and knowledge in the use of modern technology or other activities. Discussion and conclusion: Findings show that effective activities are the ones that decreased the feeling of loneliness in the elderly including a group of people, which were directed by a chosen group leader. They performed in groups of different activities, from recreational exercise, housekeeping, handcrafting and art, gardening, using modern technology, conversation, exchange of opinion, laughter therapy, and reminiscence therapy.
