Abstract:Namen magistrskega dela je opisati in predstaviti stare nordijske rune in runske zapise, ki jih lahko najdemo na Norveškem, Švedskem, Danskem in v določenih deželah Evrope, kjer so takratni Vikingi imeli svoj vpliv. Sami runski zapisi in nordijske rune so predstavljene v skladu s ''potrjenimi interpretacijami''.

Title:Norse runology and the mythological characteristics of runic inscriptions
Abstract:The purpose of the my master's thesis is to present and characterize old Scandinavian runes and runic records found in Norway, Sweden, Denmark and in certain regions of Europe that were influenced by Vikings of the time. I will also be focusing on Nordic mythology as the beliefs of the ancient Nordic peoples at the time played an important role in the design and development of runes and runic records. The runes were used as a written system and a language roughly from 100 AD until 1400 AD during which time they might have undergone severe changes. Runes can be found in several records in a variety of backgrounds, types, and genres. Their context, however, ranges from religious texts to simple inscriptions of names on stones. The records themselves also allow us to understand and study their authors and their culture as a part of their identity and history. Not all runes will be presented in my dissertation. However, I will be focusing mainly on those which in my opinion best represent their time periods and themes. Furthermore, the records will be in a chronological order according to "confirmed interpretations". Sources and literature will be presented and used accordingly in this sense. What is more, I will be focusing on the though process and "philosophy" of the ancient Nordic peoples. In this part of my dissertation, sagas will be used as sources as they have been an object of several debates and analysis among scientists and experts. In the main part of my dissertation I will focus on the runic alphabet, specifically the old Futhark. Old Futhark as the beginning of the runic word is also a form of the oldest runic alphabet which includes among its symbols elements of magic and mythology that were of great importance among the ancient Norse. Moreover, I will present the runic alphabet from a historical and philosophical point of view while trying to avoid linguistic features and theories as much as possible. Lastly, I will focus on certain rune stones which best represent their type of runic records and which best illustrate the themes and reasons for their placement and creation.
